Radiometric dating involves quantifying the amount of carbon present by measuring the emitted beta particles from its radioactive decay. Gas proportional counting involves converting samples to CO 2 gas followed by detection and counting of the beta particles. Liquid scintillation counting involves converting the sample into a carbon-rich liquid, which is then added to a scintillator. When beta particles are emitted, the scintillator will emit a flash of light.

Since the early twentieth century scientists have found ways to accurately measure geological time. The discovery of radioactivity in uranium by the French physicist, Henri Becquerelin paved the way of measuring absolute time. Shortly after Becquerel's find, Marie Curiea French chemist, isolated another highly radioactive element, radium. The realisation that radioactive materials emit rays indicated a constant change of those materials from one element to another.
