In the Amish culture, youth determine whether they will be baptized into the church through a process called Rumspringa. Mary and her friend Ruth, who will also remain anonymous, have been on Rumspringa since age Contrary to popular belief, Rumspringa can last longer than a year.
Tom Shachtman is the author of more than two dozen books.
This time, which usually happens around the mid-to-late teen years, is a chance for youth to get a sense of what the world has to offer as a whole and what place their life holds in it. Rumspringa ends in one of two ways: either the person chooses to get baptized within the Amish church or they decide to leave the community and assimilate into the outside world. During Rumspringa, rules and restrictions are eased up on to give the adolescent room to discover and explore.
